Wateridge Trial

The Jersey Care Leavers Association has welcomed the verdict of the jury in the trial of Gordon Claude Wateridge, the former house parent at Haut de la Garenne, who has been found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault and one count of assault. We feel that this is a small victory in the fight for justice that care leavers have fought for so long. We are indebted to the bravery shown by former residents of Haut de la Garenne during what must have been a harrowing time.

Quarterly Gathering

The JCLA held our quarterly gathering on Saturday 12th September 2009. We fully advertised the meeting by handing out 5,000 flyers, advertising in the Jersey Evening Post and contacting all our Care Leavers and friends.
This meeting was a great success - attended by approximately 40 to 50 Care Leavers and Friends of Jersey Care Leavers and members of the public. We would like to thank guest speakers Helen Holland, a Care Leaver from Scotland; Moyra Hawthorn of Scottish Institute of Residential Care and Bob Balfour who is producing a self help pack for the JCLA.

Historical Abuse Enquiry

The Jersey Care Leavers' Association today condemned the decision by Jersey's Attorney General to drop another eleven cases in the historical abuse inquiry. The decision raises serious questions about the commitment to justice of the Attorney General, William Bailhache.
Following more than a year of investigations and well over a hundred individuals coming forward with allegations, there is now a wealth of evidence of the extensive abuse of children in Jersey's care system in past decades. The police have now submitted numerous cases to the Attorney General. They clearly believe that there are good grounds for prosecution in all of these cases. For the Attorney General to be throwing out so many of them shows an extraordinary reluctance to prosecute. It has all the hallmarks of an attempt to protect the abusers, and those who protected them years ago, at the expense of the victims.
On the day when the news of the lack of prosecutions was released, the Attorney General was 'not available for comment' to the local press. This suggests a serious lack of concern for the feelings of care leavers on Jersey, many of whom will be disillusioned and angered by this news. [In some cases the victims have still not been informed of these decisions]. Jim Goddard of the UK Care Leavers' Association, which has been helping the Jersey Care Leavers' Association, said: "We condemn the handling of these cases. We have seen prosecutions in similar cases in the UK. To build up the hopes of so many care leavers – at great cost, to many, of their peace of mind – only to have them dashed when prosecutions don’t result is adding insult to injury. Abuse victims on Jersey have suffered enough in years gone by. This compounds their suffering."
