Our aim is to provide support and
advice to those who have
experienced care here in Jersey
Our Purpose
The Jersey Careleavers' Association is run by care leavers for care leavers, all individuals over the age of 18 who have come through the care system are entitled to full membership. We are here for the needs of all care leavers, whatever their age. As the vast majority of children who have been placed in care is through no fault of their own, the Jersey Careleavers' Association (JCLA) wants to end the social disadvantage shown to care leavers by achieving significant positive change. JCLA was formed in April 2008 after the opening of the investigation into child abuse at Haut de la Garenne children’s home.

We are a group of adults who have come through the care system in Jersey. We were approached by the Careleavers Association in the UK with an offer of support and advice on how to form a Careleavers Association for Jersey. Thanks to their guidance, we now have a number of brave people who have been in various children’s homes across the island, who have come together to form a strong group.

Our aims and objectives include the provision of a platform where care leavers can work together to end the social stigma connected to children who are or have been in care. Supporting care leavers who have suffered abuse either physically or mentally whilst in the care of people who should have been looking after them. Helping with access to childhood case records, so that care leavers can deal with their future by first understanding their past.

The provision of professional and therapeutic services to be made available to care leavers to offer support and counselling where needed Advocating for the improvement of after care provision, so that current and future care leavers may enjoy a decent standard of life. Where applicable, highlighting discrimination and challenging negative stereotypes when the need occurs, so that care leavers may enjoy the same rights and opportunities as others. We also intend to promote, conduct and publish research so as to raise public awareness of the specific needs of care leavers.
